Retraining the Harness Racehorse
by Mary Anne Donovan-Wright & Robyn Cuffey
"....blows the commonly
held misconceptions about Standardbred horses out of the water
in its first few pages and goes on to totally reeducate the reader
about a squandered resource in the equine world. A history of
the breed is followed by the authors' own, not-so-predictable,
introductions into the world of harness racing horses cum saddle
prospects. Their candor and warmth lead you straight into the
following chapters with the resolve that, 'Hey, if they can do
this... so can I!' " -- Rhonda J. Hart, Editor, The Gaited
Horse magazine
"This is a great book filled
with knowledge, wisdom and compassion. I look forward to a second
edition." -- Robert Causey, DVM, PhD, Animal and Veterinary
Sciences, University of Maine
"The retraining manuals
are very useful to our adoptive owners. We refer others to it
often." -- Ontario Standardbred Adoption Society
"At last, an easy, step-by-step
guide to retraining harness racehorses for pleasure use is available
for Standardbred owners... although books on training abound,
none were specifically geared towards Standardbreds and their
strengths and weaknesses until now. Both authors bring years
of Standardbred retraining experiences to the work, and share
them throughout the book." -- Anne Loiselle, Hoof Beats

The Essential Guide to Carriage Driving
Robyn Cuffey and Jaye-Allison Winkel
Seeing the need for a truly practical
guide to carriage driving, the authors combined their over thirty
years' of driving experience in the writing of The Essential
Guide to Carriage Driving. Generously illustrated with over 350
photographs and diagrams and covering topics ranging from the
selection and fitting of harness and vehicle to preparing for
competition and driving multiples, this book is sure to become
an indispensable resource.
Robyn Cuffey is an international
clinician specializing in retraining Standardbred horses. Cuffey
began carriage driving twenty years ago and in this time she
has driven for recreation and for competition in combined driving,
pleasure showing and competitive driving. She has trained and
driven horses and ponies for single driving and pairs. Knowing
that too many people are lucky to "survive" their first
carriage driving experiences with ill-fitting and marginally
safe equipment and inappropriate horses and vehicles, helping
others get a safe start in carriage driving is a primary goal
for Cuffey. As an instructor and trainer at her Buxton, Maine
farm, Cuffey fields questions about carriage driving almost daily.
This book was written in response to this interest from students
and fellow horse owners.
Paperback, 8 ½ x 11 in.,

Horse & Cart (DVD-R)
In this video companion to her
book The Essential Guide to Carriage Driving Maine clinician
Robyn Cuffey offers helpful tips on selecting affordable and
safe combinations of beginner's cart and lightweight breast-collar
pleasure driving harness for a single horse, shows variations
in harness styles, explains how to apply and adjust the various
harness parts and how to hitch the horse to the cart's shafts,
and demonstrates safe driving on the road.
Sleighs and Sleighbells (DVD-R)
Sleighs come in numerous styles,
as ably demonstrated by Ursula Baier, a volunteer at Skyline
Farm in North Yarmouth, Maine. Ursula takes you on a guided tour
of the Skyline Farm collection of sleighs and cutters, pointing
out the features that make each one unique. Then Robyn Cuffey
of West Buxton, Maine, shows the proper techniques for driving
a sleigh, along with some tips on how to turn and how to avoid
getting into trouble in deep snow. Finally, Vicki Schmidt of
Hebron, Maine, displays many different styles of sleighbell -
including hip drops, shaft bells, body bells, hame bells, and
saddle chimes - shows how to attach each style, and demonstrates
how to accustom a horse to hearing and wearing bells. |
